Hemicell® enzymes increase nutritional benefit of soy-based feed

Hemicell, a unique enzyme-based feed ingredient, reduces immune stress in animals, aids digestion and increases the nutritional value of soy-based diets for monogastric animals such as laying hens, broilers and swine.

All plant protein sources, including soybean meal, contain b-Mannan – an anti-nutritive fiber which inhibits complete utilization of feed by monogastrics. Hemicell feed enzyme is a source of b-Mannanase enzyme which degrades and eliminates the b-Mannan fiber to provide both nutritional and health benefits.

Manufactured by ChemGen Corporation of USA – a principal of Behn Meyer – Hemicell is a natural product made by fermentation of Bacillus Lentus. Available in dry or liquid form, its beneficial effects on livestock have been confirmed through both accredited research and many on-site trials and studies.

In field tests performed with large poultry companies, Hemicell significantly improved egg production, egg size, feed conversion and flock uniformity. Feed costs were noticeably reduced and performance maintained. In broilers there was improvement in the uniformity of body weight, a reduction in mortality rates, and more efficient utilization of feed ingredients.

In corn/soy swine diets, the application of Hemicell improved feed efficiency by 4% to 9% and gain by 2% to12%. It also improved the health status of the herd as determined through lower incidence of diarrhea and a much reduced culling rate. Studies have verified that the improvement in feed conversion also translates to reduced excreta per unit of lean meat produced. There were simultaneous improvements in the fecal digestibility of energy, protein and fiber, as well as the ileal digestibility of dry matter, protein and lysine.

With increasing environmental concerns, the use of Hemicell in feed will help livestock producers to minimize waste. Today, Hemicell is widely used in poultry and swine feeds throughout the U.S. and Asia, including China. Recently conducted tests demonstrate its benefits also in fish feeds.

Feed additives such as Hemicell are applied as micro ingredients after the feed goes through the pelleting process.
To obtain the most efficient results, ChemGen has developed :

Post Pellet Application System
Designed to be flexible, easily configurable, and easy to use, the system allows feedmills to accurately apply feed enzyme/s at configurable rates. Each post-pellet application system supports two independent production lines with up to three enzymes applied per line.

Micro–computer
At the heart of the system is a 30 MHz C-programmable micro-computer which controls all aspects of the system, including pump rate/s, feed flow control, touch screen communication, system printer, modem and network connectivity. (The micro-computer is used instead of a PLC to avoid restrictive Relay Ladder Logic which typically does not support high–level math operations.)

Touch Screen
The colour touch screen is used for control, monitoring, calibration and system set-up. The operator can control the application rate of the enzyme/s through the use of product profiles (recipes) entered into the touch screen. It also shows the status of the surge bin, pump, gate, total feed produced and enzyme application totals in the language selected. (The system supports English, Spanish, Thai, Chinese and Malay).

Calibration & Accuracy
The system supports 16 different feed densities per production line. Each different feed type is calibrated independently for the highest level of accuracy attainable. The material test, dosing pump as well as various other calibration processes are fully automated to minimize human error. The simple one–button calibration procedure has 99.9% reproducibility.


HEMICELL® degrades ß-mannan in feed and, thus reverses the negative impacts imposed on animals.
HEMICELL® is particularly effective in diets rich in soybean meal, sunflower meal, rapeseed meal, sesame meal, palm kernel meal, copra meal, and guar meal.

Meta-analysis results from four EU studies in broilers in which the recommended dose of HEMICELL® feed enzyme was fed resulted in these effects in 42 days (figure):
4.2 % increase in weight gain (P<0.0001)
3.6 % improvement in feed conversion ratio (7.0 points; P<0.0004), and
7.5 % improvement in EPEF (P<0.0001).
